When all sorts of muddled fruits and saccharine cherries began to infiltrate the Old Fashioned, it became a sad reflection of its former self. Once a widely revered mixed drink, many purists started to ask for their Whiskey Cocktail, but made the 'old fashioned' way: spirit, sugar, bitters and water, just as the first cocktail was defined.
